Mark of the Beast

TThe mark of the beast is described in one passage, and every conclusion about it has to begin there.

(Re 13:16-18) And it puts under compulsion all persons, the small and the great, and the rich and the poor, and the free and the slaves, that they should give these a mark in their right hand or upon their forehead, and that nobody might be able to buy or sell except a person having the mark, the name of the wild beast or the number of its name. Here is where wisdom comes in: Let the one that has intelligence calculate the number of the wild beast, for it is a man's number; and its number is six hundred and sixty-six.

Physical, not spiritual

Three details in the text settle the nature of the mark. It is placed under compulsion by a system that must be able to see who has it. It governs buying and selling, which happen in the physical world. And it is "a man's number," something a human being can calculate and measure. Satan is a spirit and cannot mark anyone physically. Human beings cannot mark one another spiritually. The mark is therefore a physical mark, forced on people by Satan's earthly representatives, the beast system, acting in his behalf (Revelation 13:3-4).

A mark OF the beast

The wording matters. It is not a mark from God identifying those who follow Satan, as in Ezekiel's vision of the man with the writer's inkhorn. It is a mark of the beast, for the beast, given by the beast. The wild beast of Revelation 13 has seven heads, the seven world powers that ruled over God's people from Egypt to Anglo-America, and the mark belongs to the eighth king who "springs from the seven" (Revelation 17:11). Because the eighth king inherits the character of all seven, the mark carries something from each of them. That is why the studies on this site follow the one false god the Bible keeps naming across those kingdoms, and why the trail runs from the golden calf through Moloch, Kaiwan and Rephan to the six-pointed star of Saturn.

What accepting it means

Taking the mark is an act of worship. It declares that Satan's system, not Jehovah, is the answer to mankind's problems, and it is a rejection of the testimony given by the two witnesses during the 1,260 days.

(Re 14:9, 10) If anyone worships the wild beast and its image, and receives a mark on his forehead or upon his hand, he will also drink of the wine of the anger of God that is poured out undiluted into the cup of his wrath.

The scriptures treat it as a sin against the holy spirit. The consequence is not torment but permanent death. That is why God placed the warning in his word, and why he invited those with intelligence to calculate the number before the day arrives.
