666, the Number of the Beast

The number of the wild beast in Revelation 13:18. It is called a man's number, which means it can be calculated and seen. The digits themselves are not evil; the number is a symbol that identifies the eighth king and his mark.

(Re 13:18) Here is where wisdom comes in: Let the one that has intelligence calculate the number of the wild beast, for it is a man's number; and its number is six hundred and sixty-six.

Just a number, until it is calculated

The digits 6, 6 and 6 are no more evil than any other. A house at 666 Main Street is not cursed. Revelation was written in signs, so the number is a symbol of something that can be calculated to six hundred and sixty-six. The verse says two things about it: it is a man's number, so it belongs to the visible, measurable world, and it can be calculated, so God expects it to be worked out from the clues he provided.

An invitation

"Let the one that has intelligence calculate" is not a riddle set to frustrate the reader. It is an invitation, and Jehovah does not invite people to do what he has given them no means to do. The clues are in the scriptures and in the history the scriptures record.

The pattern in Daniel

The first appearance of the number is not in Revelation at all. Nebuchadnezzar's image of gold on the plain of Dura stood sixty cubits high on a base six cubits wide (Daniel 3:1), and all peoples were commanded to worship it or die (Daniel 3:4-6). Revelation 13 repeats every element of that scene: an image, compulsory worship, death for refusal, and the number 666. The image in Daniel foreshadows the image of the beast.

How this site counts it

The study series on the mark of the beast follows the false god Saturn through all seven heads of the beast, from the golden calf Apis to the star of Rephan named at Amos 5:26 and Acts 7:43, and identifies that star as the six-pointed star inside the ouroboros. The final part shows that when the digital roots of the mitosis sequence are plotted and mirrored, the star of Saturn appears, and that the sum of the numbers from 1 to 36 is 666. Six points, six sides and six corners had always been an arbitrary reading of the hexagram; the series reaches the same number by a path that starts in Israel's own history of false worship.
